A recent study reveals that the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company exploited enslaved labor on St. Thomas Island even after the British Empire abolished slavery in 1833. The company used enslaved workers for hazardous tasks at its primary coaling hub, highlighting the postal industry’s historical ties to slavery. The Postal Museum’s exhibition “Voices of Resistance: Slavery and Post in the Caribbean” showcases these findings.
